Task 3 Final Evaluation

We effectively conveyed a sense of space by using a small singular interior location because we wanted to challenge ourselves by using an interior location, unlike the previous 2 tasks which was all done in exterior locations. We also wanted to film in a dark room using a singular light source which was the flash on my iPhone to manipulate shadow and light on the wall in my bedroom. With the flash we experimented with different textures of objects we used as props such as wood, metal and plastic and kept our idea simple but still sticking to the concept. There are numerous things we could’ve done different such as using more types of materials to explore more textures, included a loose narrative, use different lighting, a bigger location and a bigger wall space because we didn’t have enough room to film and the walls weren’t big enough to cast the shadows we wanted.

Things worked out differently from the way we had visualized. We initially intended to still stick with the Christmas theme with an eerie twist but was going to film outdoors. Then from our one to one we were influenced by an idea to just collect a bunch of small Christmas decorations, filming in an interior location instead of exterior unlike the two previous tasks and creating something different with just a collection of props in a small dark room using a singular flash from my iPhone to experiment with the concept of light and shadows for example using a wall as the base to cast our desired shadows. One thing that was a problem was that whilst holding the flash light and the decorations our hands got tired very easily but that wasn’t a big concern. The filming location in my room was also very small which made it difficult filming along with the tripod but we somehow managed.

I have learnt and developed many skills such as creativity. This can be shown by keeping out idea simple yet effective by using a few props we had in hand and film in one location which was in doors. My research skills was also improved by taking inspiration from ‘Solar Breath’ which was one continuous take of a window by also including long takes on some of the footage used such as the beginning of the film where there was a close up of a tinsel. We wanted to have a long take of this so that the audience could have time to take in all the information such as what is the object and what is happening. My improvisational skills was also developed for example creating our own sound piece by using a glass filled with water and using our fingers going around the brim making a high pitched noise which provokes a visceral response.

We worked effectively as a team for example we shared the roles of cinematography, sound recording and editing so that we we’re limited to one specific role which is beneficial because we got to experienced what each role was like. We also was excellent with our time management filming and editing our film all in one day showing how determined we are with this task.
