Task 2

For exercise 2 we we’re given the task to film a selection of wide shots and close ups. Record some spot fx and ‘atmos’ recordings that best represent what you find there. After doing this we we’re then asked to edit the images from the wide shots onto the sound from the spot fx and close ups onto the atmos recordings to make a 1 minute film.

The location we used to film was around the winter gardens. We came up with the idea of juxtaposing nature with the modern world we live in where we are surrounded by proliferating technology. We chose to film things such as plants, water and other natural resources. We then recorded man-made sounds such as bells, sirens and people busking on the street to create contrast between footage of nature.

We experimented with combining spot fx sounds onto wide shots and atmos sounds onto close up shots and learnt that you can be very creative by generating dissimilarity between different types of shots and sounds. For example, having a wide shot of the winter gardens with a spot fx sound of drilling which you wouldn’t expect to be in there displaying contrast between the two.

Our filming location was very ideal as it housed a variety of plants and natural resources such as a water fountain. This environment was very peaceful full of natural life where we captured sounds of dripping water and stitched it onto a close up shot of something else and for the footage of the water dripping we used the sound of train tracks from the train ride in the city fair to replace the sound of the water dripping making a clear contrast which will elicit a confusing response from the audience.

Overall, I have learnt that editing different sounds with different composition shots can create a totally new sense of meaning.
